Diecast models last for decades if you protect them from the three things that damage them most: sunlight, dust and moisture. Here is a simple routine.
Keep them out of direct sunlight
Sunlight fades paint and turns clear blister packaging yellow over time. Display models on a shelf that never gets direct sun, and keep boxed models in a cupboard or drawer.
Use a closed display case
A case with a door or lid is the easiest way to stop dust building up. Acrylic display boxes for single models also work well for your favourites.
Watch the humidity
Humid weather can cause rust spots on metal bases and make cardboard boxes go soft or mouldy. Keep collections in a dry room, away from bathrooms and kitchens, and add a few silica gel sachets to storage boxes and cases.
Cleaning, gently
- Use a soft, clean make-up brush or a camera air blower to remove dust.
- For marks, use a dry microfibre cloth. Avoid household cleaners and alcohol, which can damage paint and printed details.
- Hold models by the base, not by mirrors, spoilers or antennas.
Look after the packaging
For many collectors the box or card matters as much as the car. Store packaged models flat or upright without stacking heavy items on top, and keep them away from damp floors.
